Baz was coming over.

Baz was coming over!

BaZ wAs CoMinG oVEr!

Cici stared at her ceiling, trying not to reverberate herself out of existence.

The man she’d had a crush on from the ripe ol’ age of eight was coming to her home the very next day to pick up a care package. She was going to have to see him without his sister around. To interact with him. To act like a completely normal, well-adjusted adult.

Oh no.

“Relax, Cici. It’s gonna be fine. You’ve managed to be normal around Baz for most of your life.”

Well… normal was relative.

But it wasn’t like she had always been a hopeless mess around him. Not at all. But she hadn’t seen him since she’d forced herself to get over him and respect that he was in love with someone else.

And sure, yeah, they were broken up, a news-bomb that Sabra had so graciously dropped right onto Cici’s brain. But that didn’t mean the shape of her, the echo, wasn’t still there. Baz’s ex was a gorgeous, well-spoken woman with a smile like a movie star. A plus size model with a massive following on social media and multiple magazine campaigns. She’d even been on the cover of several magazines and billboards in Times Square.

Nothing like Cici.

No, Cici would never be anything like that. She wasn’t graceful. She wasn’t glamorous. She was just… well, Cici.

For a long time, she’d harbored resentment towards the beautiful woman who’d so thoroughly rooted herself in Baz’s heart, but after their second year together Cici had realized she either needed to be a good friend or be a stranger.

Naturally, she’d chosen to be a friend.

But that was so much easier to do with only the occasional digital exchange with the handsome man. It was also much easier to do when he was actually dating and happy. But seeing him face to face and newly single was… well, it was a lot.

“It’s fine, it’s fine,” Cici chanted to herself, like if she said it enough that she could brainwash herself into thinking so. “Just take a nap, have a nice night in the family, and when you wake up tomorrow, you’ll realize that none of this is a big deal.”

Except when Cici woke up the next day, it still was very much a big deal.
