He thinks she’s rude and wild. She thinks he’s arrogant and entitled. But they just might have more in common than they realize…

Book Description

Charlie Miller has dibs as the town’s most eligible bachelor. Handsome, charming, and rich. But he doesn’t date.

Well, not anymore.

Because Charlie has a secret past with women. A past not even his family knows. A secret he’s too embarrassed to tell.

Daisy Dixon has a name that’s sweet as pie, but she’s a fiery, wild rodeo performer. She lives in a tiny travel-trailer and eats the free food and drink the rodeo provides.

Because she is desperately, down-to-the-last-penny broke. With a secret she’s too embarrassed to tell.

Needing a break from ranch life, Charlie joins the rodeo circuit full-time for the season.

It’s clear from the start that Charlie and Daisy do not get along.

Then Charlie sees sharp-tongued Daisy protect someone from unwanted advances. Twice. And he starts to think maybe he’s misjudged her.

He wants to bust through her tough exterior and get to know the real Daisy. But it’s not going to be easy.

Can they break free from the secrets holding them hostage to find love and acceptance?

Instantly, goosebumps broke out along her arms. Oh… that was certainly something.

Charlie continued. “But it’s still just as delicious. Maybe more delicious. It’s hard to say. Gert is pretty incredible.”

Daisy swallowed hard, her tongue apparently having forgotten how to lay right in her mouth. “Uh-huh.”

In another moment of serendipity, a chicken walked up to her and warbled insistently until Daisy picked it up, giving her something else to focus on instead of the rushing feeling shooting through her. Sure, it had been a while since she’d had any fun dates, but that was by choice. She was so busy and stressed over finances that something as frivolous as a date seemed more exhausting than enjoyable.

But suddenly she was acutely aware of just how close Charlie was to her and just how good-looking he was.

No, good-looking wasn’t the right word. More like drop-dead gorgeous and completely unfair.

“I’m going to go get dressed then wash off some of the equipment while we’re here. Are you going to be okay with all these hens?” he asked.

“I dunno. They are direct descendants of dinosaurs, you know.”

Charlie grinned, shaking his head at her, and that made her stomach flip like it was in the Olympics. Weird. “Well, if they start chasing you through the tall grass, remember to zigzag.”

“Would that actually help?”

“I don’t know. Remind me to ask the next dinosaur expert I happen to run into.”

“I’ll make sure to do that.”

Chuckling, he gave that little salute he liked to do and headed off, leaving her with the chickens. After a while, Clara asked if she’d like to help her check the nesting boxes for eggs, and Daisy didn’t think she’d ever agreed to a chore so fast in her life.

From there they went inside, and Clara didn’t mind Daisy helping along with breakfast too. And by help, that meant it was mostly clearing dishes and handing Clara the cooking diva things.

But still, it was so… nice. Daisy knew that she should stop using that word, but it just fit so right. It was easy to imagine how much better her life would have been if she’d been surrounded by people like the Millers instead of the cards she’d actually been handed.

And geez, to think she’d thought Charlie was arrogant. The truth was, he was the furthest thing from it.

Daisy felt bad about how she’d misinterpreted him. It was clear that Charlie had a thing about being touched, and he was a real homebody. Given what his home was like, she couldn’t actually blame him. But she’d totally taken his flinching and tension as judgment, as elitism and disdain, when really it was just his discomfort.

And the truth was she’d been jealous about his money. She knew that. It didn’t seem fair that some people never had to struggle in their life while she was busy deciding if she could even eat for the day. But Charlie couldn’t help that he was born to a wealthy family any more than she could help that she was born to a mother that never wanted her. It was clear that his family wasn’t out of touch or spoiled and shared their wealth with pretty much everyone around them.

Hindsight was funny like that, she supposed. It certainly made it a lot easier to see how her own bitterness had tinted her view of things.

How much time had she wasted by setting things off on the wrong foot? Then again, it was him who’d come up to her in the middle of her telling a story to her friends to tell her to tone the swearing down. Not really a great way to start a friendship.

Oh well. Everyone had bad days, and she was glad they were past that now.

Breakfast turned out just as enjoyable and delicious as the other meals, and when it was over, Clara asked her if she wanted to go out and milk the goats. Apparently, she normally would do it earlier, but since Charlie had said how much she’d enjoyed playing with them the day before, she’d waited so Daisy could join her.

Daisy was pretty sure that Clara was a saint.

It was interesting learning how the woman got her goats into the milking stands and her process of taking care of the flock. Her goats were so incredibly well-behaved, but they still had plenty of personality. Especially Bilbo, Arwen and Eowyn. Daisy couldn’t be sure, but she had a feeling the goats had actively tried to prank her several times, and she’d only avoided it because of Clara’s warning.

Daisy wished that she could stay there forever. But eventually the goats were all handled, there was a quick trip to drop off garden scraps to the pigs for a treat, and then it was time to go. She wished she could stay, she really did, but they did need to get back to the rodeo and prep for work starting the next day.

“You ready?” Charlie asked her.

No, she wasn’t, but she knew it was time. She still needed to haul her clothes and bedding to the laundromat and get all the produce she’d been given into her mini-fridge. Not to mention she needed to check in with Melinda and Billy. Thankfully, she’d been able to connect to the Miller’s WiFi so she was able to message them that way, but she was sure they were expecting her back.

Once more, the ride was fairly quiet on their return, the radio still playing quietly. Daisy wasn’t sure what was on Charlie’s mind, but hers was going over everything that had happened, playing each moment in detail so she would never forget it. The next time she had an intense craving to break her vow of sobriety, she would think of the peace and happiness that she’d experienced on the Miller Ranch and remind herself that that kind of joy couldn’t be found in a bottle.

And who knew, maybe it would actually work.

For the first time in a long, long while, Daisy actually had hope for the future. That maybe not everything had to be a struggle. That tomorrow could be more than a fight to survive and there could be something bright in her future. And that was more valuable than anything else she could have asked for.

She owed Charlie so much, and she didn’t think he had a clue.

But that was okay, because he had a staunch ally in her now. She was going to be the best, best, bestest friend he could ask for and give him whatever support he needed. If she had to chase off eager ladies with baseball bats, she would.

And maybe, if she was by his side long enough, he would be comfortable enough to have her at his side.

Whoa. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves.
