Book Description
Quirky, six-foot-tall Clara Miller has it all. And although she’s on the bigger side, she’s gorgeous from head to toe. She’s got all the money she could ever need, a successful ranch where she gets to tend to her chickens and vegetable garden, and a Papa and siblings who are loving and supportive.
So why does it still feel like something’s missing?
Nathan Westbrook is living a nightmare. He’s angry, bitter, scarred, in constant pain, and beyond frustrated.
Getting struck by lightning will do that to a man.
He was practically self-sustained on his homestead. Now it’s tough just getting dressed everyday, much less getting the animals fed and the gardens tended to.
When Clara volunteers at church to take a meal and groceries to a man on the outskirts of town, she has no idea what she’s in for. After all, she just wants to be of service. And seeing folks enjoy her food makes her day.
Nathan doesn’t want anyone’s help. He’s a loner and likes it that way. Then one day, she busts down his door, and everything changes.
Can this country beauty tame the beast Nathan has become? Or will he run her off before she has the chance…

“You alright down there?” Clara asked from up on her ladder. As much as Nathan would have preferred for her to stay on the floor, it was much better for her to be up there than him.
“Yeah, I’m fine. It’s just, you know, another thing on the list.”
“Today really has been eventful, hasn’t it?”
“That’s one way to put it.”
But he’d take all the mess again if it meant he could hold Clara like that a little longer.
Nathan was acutely aware of what he looked like. He was scarred all over, with some of his features twisted and pulled by the grafts. He was more akin to a monster than a man, but when Clara looked up at him while he was dancing… well, it had been easy to forget about what he’d become. The world had fallen away just like she’d said, and although he was no leading man, he was so glad that, for a moment, she saw him as a worthy substitute.
But then the storm had gone and busted out part of his house. He really must have kicked too many puppies in a past life or angered some sort of storm spirit, because his luck couldn’t be that bad.
“I’m almost done up here. Is the coast clear yet?”
“Almost,” Nathan answered, redoubling his efforts on the glass. He knew he would be finding bits of it for ages and that he would probably need to wear thick shoes in his place instead of his house slippers or socks, but he wanted to get as much of it taken care of as possible, so Clara didn’t step in any of it. Sure, he’d gone and fetched her the muddy boots she’d left by his door, but he didn’t want anything getting up past the treads. “There. I think that’s most of it for now.”
“Fantastic. I’ll vacuum in the morning. Assuming the power is back and all that.”
“The morning, right. What time even is it?”
“I left my phone in the kitchen. You got yours?”
Of course, he had his. It was how he’d played the music to their little dance, after all. It had been a quick search to find the song, and he’d almost chickened out. But seeing Clara sitting there, dejection across all her features, wishing for something so simple as a dance… well, how could he refuse her?
And also, how blind were the neanderthals she went to school with? No one asked her to a dance? Utterly preposterous. Clara was sweet, kind, beautiful and clearly knew how to move on her feet. How could anyone look at her and find her lacking?
Totally blind, all of them.
So, despite his fear, despite his assurance that she would reject him, he’d asked her to dance with him. The beauty and the crippled beast. It was preposterous, really, but then her hand had been in his and it had been…
It had been…
It had been so right.
