“Is it good to know?”

The corners of her eyes crinkled as her grin grew. “Yeah, it is.”

Mick hadn’t expected her to admit it was. He’d been half-expecting for her to volley a comeback at him that got him bantering. But the matter-of-fact way she said it gave him pause, and before he knew it, she was setting a steaming bowl of thick, delicious-smelling stew in front of him.

“So, I know that first night you were sicker than anything, but you perked right back up when you heard I brought biscuits.”

Mick nodded. “It was a real shame those went to waste.”

“Oh, don’t worry, the chickens loved them once they got stale. But anyway, I bring them up because I made you a mini batch for tonight. Figure they’d go great with the stew.”

Mick’s mouth did indeed start to water, and boom, third strike, he felt the hardened shell around his heart crack right in two, the feelings that he’d been suppressing overwhelming his denial in an outright flood.

She’d brought him food. She’d brought him Ginger Ale. She’d nursed him to health and then, on top of everything, made fresh homemade biscuits for him with a honey glaze. He’d had them a couple of times before thanks to Clara’s cooking, and the fact that she remembered how he’d liked them felt so incredibly significant.

And so, it was while he was staring at her over his bowl of stew that he realized he might just be in love.

Not full-blown declarations of eternity love, but a small flicker of light that he’d never felt before. But when he looked at Cassidy, he saw so many possibilities he never could have imagined before.
