“Mrs. Whittaker, there seems to be a mix-up—”

All the heads turned to the deep, slightly accented voice coming from one of the few doorways in the room. Charity wasn’t sure what she was expecting, but it certainly wasn’t a man who checked off tall, dark, handsome, and well dressed all in one fell swoop.

His shoulders were broad, taking up most of the doorway he was standing in, and his thick brows were drawn together in a concerned expression before he noticed there were others in the room and startled. His skin was a beautiful sort of candied ocher, rich and deep like he’d just walked off a vibrantly sunny beach and not a small-town doctor’s office. His hair was thick and black, with the slightest bit of salt and pepper just beginning to grace his temples.

Wow. Oh wow. Charity felt her mouth dry up and her mind quickly scribbled down a dozen and one positive attributes about the man. It was almost embarrassing, and not for the first time, she was glad that no one could read her mind.

“Wait, is it two o’clock already?” He bent his arm so that the navy button-up he was wearing revealed a fairly subdued watch, and then those thick brows of his were drawing together again. Goodness, he had bone structure that wasn’t fair. High and wide cheekbones with a defined edge, and a classic jaw with a cleft in his chin.

He was like a movie star or former model and—oh shoot, she was staring, wasn’t she?

“Apologies, Miss…” He looked down at the tablet in his hand and scrolled a moment before seeming to recover. “Miss Miller. I’m still settling in. I’ll be ready in a couple of minutes, if you don’t mind.”

“Sure. Do what you gotta do.”

The man gave a grateful nod then disappeared back into the room he came from, leaving the three women staring at the empty doorway.

“Certainly different from our last doctor, isn’t he?” Mrs. Whittaker asked, chuckling lightly.

Charity could only nod, her attention still lingering on the door.

Maybe if she wasn’t so bone-tired and wrapped up in her sister’s healing, she would have had the wherewithal to be embarrassed. But when was the last time she had even looked at a man? Sure, her divorce was finalized a while ago, but the whole messy affair had entirely turned her off from dating. She hadn’t had a flicker of interest since then.

Not that she was interested in the doctor. That would be ridiculous. But she couldn’t deny that maybe—definitely—there was an attraction there, warm and inviting and fizzing along the top of her mind like a soda.

“Hey, where’s the bathroom around here?” Cass asked, rolling herself out of Charity’s grip. The receptionist told her, and Cass trundled herself off, glaring at her older sister as if she was daring her to say something.

Charity almost did, but she caught herself and let her sister roll off to do her thing. “Will you just leave the door unlocked?”

“Only if you guard it. Wouldn’t want someone to come in and startle me off the toilet.”

It was a funny image, but Charity managed not to snort. “Yeah, I can do that.”

She let her sister enter the bathroom then moved to stand in front of the door. Unfortunately, that had the side effect of leaving Charity alone with her thoughts, and they went right back to the doctor.
